There was an expectation that perhaps this week, after President Trump’s divisive immigration ban into the U.S., there would be more overt political messages on the runways of the liberal and welcoming European city of Copenhagen. That wasn’t necessarily the case for the first few days. But then, after her cheerful Lala Berlin show, Leyla Piedayesh stepped out—not to take her bow, but to raise a handmade sign instead. The Iranian-German designer displayed the phrase “I Am An Immigrant” to loud applause as models stood proudly behind her, some wearing heavy, oversized knits, printed dresses with cascading fabric and cut-out shoulders, and draped tunics embroidered with words likechange, think, andrevolution. It was a powerful and poignant end to a show that felt lively and youthful.Piedayesh succeeded in creating edgy, eye-catching looks to clothe the downtown set of any big city. The wardrobe included crafty riffs on streetwear, like an orange cargo pocket A-line skirt and black hoodie, a Lurex dress topped off with a gray menswear-inspired overcoat, and a black leather jacket and trousers worn with a leopard-print and lace camisole underneath. Overall, the collection was pretty desirable: These are looks made for cool girls eager to stand up and resist.

Launched back in 2004 by Leyla Piedayesh,Lala Berlinpurports to make clothes that embody the certain edge of its home base in the German capital. Dubbed I Am Jungle and presented in the shadow of two massive stone pachyderms at the old Carlsberg Brewery’s iconic (and aptly named) Elephant Gate, Piedayesh’s Spring lineup was an undeniably youthful, getaway-ready collection, chock-full of beachy-looking knits. Knitwear remains a perennial focus for the label, a category the designer balanced out with flounced, featherweight-looking printed maxi dresses.
