The Anouki show invitation this season was charming—a pamphlet based off of old Georgian women’s newsletters. It included the collection’s inspiration (the ’70s and ’80s), beauty tips (a full vintage guide on how to care for one’s lips), and a location explanation (it was held at the city’s newest hotel, Stamba.) Designer Ana Areshidze, who is wife of the city’s mayor, is thinking a little differently than in prior seasons. This was evident not just in that pamphlet, but in the clothes, too. Areshidze swapped gratuitous embellishments for a focus on cut and print.A nice example of the collection’s new, sophisticated point of view was a floral print blouse with puffed sleeves. Elsewhere, a trench coated in silver paillettes was overwhelming, but a double-breasted dress with an off-the-shoulder collar of sequins looked just right.

Designer Anouki Areshidze’s shows are typically packed, but her latest, set at the massive Expo Georgia, felt even more crowded than usual. That might have had to do with the fact that her husband, Kakha Kaladze, a soccer player turned politician, was recently elected the mayor of Tbilisi. Some people are now referring to Areshidze as the First Lady of Tbilisi. Talk of the town aside, the designer is one of the few who has enjoyed consistent success outside of Eastern Europe. She sells at Moda Operandi and held a well-attended presentation in Milan in September.Clothing-wise, she upped the glint this season, coating trousers and skirts in silver sequins. The effect was busy when paired with anything printed, but it worked when a white wrap dress was layered over a spangly turtleneck. One thing customers can count on from Areshidze is her footwear. It’s pretty, decorated, and smile inducing. A pair of white kitten-heel pumps with bejeweled tassels was just what the collection needed for it to come together.

Anouki by Anouki Areshidze is one of the best-known labels to come out of Georgia, mostly thanks to the designer’s handmade embroidered footwear. In keeping with her successful shoes, Areshidze’s clothes are quite embellished with a look-at-me vibe. This season, she continued to explore mismatched shirting, slicing pin-striped button-ups and stitching them to natty cardigans. Some of the pieces were a bit too sweet.Georgian pride has become a bit of a thing for Tbilisi’s designers, Areshidze included. Considering her high-flying Western clientele (she sells at Moda Operandi), putting her very non-Western culture on the runway is an unexpected move. But items like belt bags with Georgian script seem like a new, fairly unfussy way to attract customers.
