Who would have thought that two chill dudes making Hawaiian shirts would become the buzziest brand at Sydney Fashion Week? Well, if you know Mikey Nolan and Toby Jones, you probably had a hunch. Alums of Ksubi, Nolan and Jones are entrepreneurial as ever, turning Double Rainbouu from a small shirting label into a flagship show of the MBFWA schedule in four years. Their secret sauce is good vibes. Nolan and Jones just have it—taste, affable personalities, and the ability to make a moment that is primed for Instagram yet still intimate IRL. But they also want to make a statement about the world at large.Their Resort 2020 show took place in Sydney’s Chinese Garden of Friendship, a serene Chinese garden atop a scenic hillside. Jones and Nolan spoke about multiculturalism and inclusivity at the show, as guests wound throughout the garden to peek the latest DR wares. A key print was a pastel utopian garden showing “creatures living in harmony.” Traditional craft techniques like shibori dying and macramé were used on robes and accessories, while other prints drew on the wonders of the natural world, from zebras to rippling waves. Jones and Nolan’s go-to silhouette is big and roomy; these have always been by-the-beach clothes. But slowly, surely, new city-ready pieces are coming into the mix—see a black knit polo button-up and the introduction of chambray. That kind of diversity will open up Double Rainbouu to a whole new world of shoppers.

The Double Rainbouu dudes are growing their business wisely. After debuting two years ago with a small selection of Hawaiian-inspired shirts, Mikey Nolan and Toby Jones have grown their brand to include swimwear, denim, shoe and sunglasses collaborations, and ready-to-wear, all included at their Resort 2019 show in Sydney.Against the divey backdrop of the Lansdowne Hotel, a sacred spot where Nirvana once performed, Nolan and Jones leaned in hard to a grungy surfer spirit, accessorizing their collection with fishing accessories and large net bags. Models wore hallucinogenic pastel prints and bold geometric graphic shirts, anchored with sandals or the brand’s new Globe sneaker collaboration. Athleisure, here as a printed sweatshirt and pants, had a tongue-in-cheek spirit, with phrases like “Double Rainbouu Leisure Industry” and “Pool Side Wifi” printed on the front and back. Layered together, it’s an eclectic vision, for sure, all high socks and contrast sleeve sweaters, but it’s easy to see these pieces infiltrating the closets of both beach bums and city slickers worldwide.

Australia Fashion Week designers have a penchant for creating collections too dressed up for their own good. Double Rainbouu’s Mikey Nolan and Toby Jones (formerly creative directors of Ksubi) are here to remedy that with their grungy, slouchy, surfer-tinged lineup. With music blaring, street-cast models ganged up in the center of the runway wearing the brand’s signature Hawaiian shirts and newly launched printed tees and slogan knits. More than other labels in Australia, Double Rainbouu feels connected to the international fashion conversation thanks to its unisex offerings, witty interpretations of corporate logos (DR’s was a take on the British tabloidThe Sun), and gawky layering and psychedelic prints. Sporting the brand’s berets and lanyards made of hiking cord and dangling keys will make you the cool kid you want to be.
