“If we don’t hold a big runway show, we don’t need dozens of looks,” says Malaika Raiss as she walks through her collection, which was presented in a smaller setting this season. Its title, Interlude, can be taken literally: It’s a little breather to take a step back and reflect on the brand’s development before the larger projects she’s currently working on are finally released. The main visual starting point for this pause was a trip to Greece. Having worked with photo prints last season, it made sense to incorporate holiday snapshots, be they of flowers or sculptures, into these new designs. Caftans and a variety of feminine dresses typical of Malaikaraiss played with volumes, which contrasted with waisted tailoring and a paper-like coat in firmer silhouettes. In addition to hosting an event in her store and creative space, Raiss had her new clothes photographed in the style of a friendship book. Models, stylists, and other close acquaintances, many of whom have been with her since the beginning of her brand, wear a collection that is undoubtedly her most personal in years. Even her husband’s habit of borrowing her pieces played a part. The unisex shirts, shorts, and resort trousers are a sign that Malaikaraiss is opening up to a wider audience.

It seems to be a trend for Berlin designers to trace their own youth for style inspiration. Malaika Raiss’s fashion journey into the past, however, was the most expansive of all, packing almost her entire individual discovery phase into one collection in keeping with her principle of “dressing the woman I always imagined I’d be one day,” from Nirvana to John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the original mothers of Y2K. The result was a (time-) capsule wardrobe that would fit in a single suitcase. The biggest challenge of the whole process was to combine grunge, modernity and sufficient elegance without the individual components losing any of their energy. Rough knitwear was paired with flowing dresses, heavy coats were loosened up with vintage-sourced Levi's jeans, and classic blazers were sprinkled between off-shoulder dresses. The designer seemed particularly keen to be as close as possible to the real behavior of those who shop her line. “I think it very much reflects the style of my customers. They mainly buy pieces from me which they combine casually,” said Raiss after the show, referring to her last collections, which were a little more consistently elegant. "Many of my customers are recognizable in these new looks,” she said. “It wasn't just a question of my own fashion past, but also their present.”

Malaikaraiss surprised industry watchers when it announced its participation in the official calendar in Berlin. After all, Malaika Raiss has presented in Copenhagen for the last few seasons. As she sees it, there’s a new spirit of optimism around Berlin Fashion Week, which inspired her return. That interest in her work has increased during her absence could be seen in the masses of guests in front of a gallery where the presentation took place. It was not a traditional show, but true to the motto: “No runway, no seating, no frowin.’’”“Euphoria” was the title she gave the collection, and it featured models enjoying huge wedding cakes and espresso martinis, which gave the proceedings the feeling of an elegant party. On display were two collections, a bridal line, which will be launched this year for Valentine’s Day, and a lineup of festive pieces made from recycled and deadstock materials that will be released in the fall. “The designs were created in a very happy period of my life for me, and I wanted to bring this happiness to the outside world,” said Raiss, before the show. “Occasionwear and wedding fashion can also be urban and cool—not just romantic. And, very importantly, it has to work on everybody.”
