Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi took Mint Designs to Minato this season, staging an exhibition of sorts next to Tokyo Tower. There were four open black frame cubes and one smaller box suspended from the ceiling with piano wire. Models entered by threes and fours to wind their way through them in an increasingly complex series of movements, set to a jazzy instrumental befitting the brand’s artsy mien.Despite the whimsical production, the collection skewed somewhat somber with a predominant palette of grays and dark greens. The show began with a few functionless mesh dresses worn almost like ponchos over trenchcoats and botanical-print sheath dresses. A tasseled wool herringbone blanket was cut into a dress and fringed top, toying with a slight Western reference. The most appealing look may have been the simple sleeveless silk dress, made special by its bright goldenrod hue and an asymmetric overlay of unfinished silk petals.

This season, Mint Designs’s Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi, both Central Saint Martins grads, exchanged the typical runway show for a charming installation, setting models up in a Minami-Aoyama gallery space. There, guests and passerby crowded in front of a glass box, where 18 models engaged in a small performance art piece—walking whimsical circles around the room to a record, then freezing in place when it skidded to a stop; later an impromptu ’40s-style dance party ensued, the girls shyly swinging themselves around the room.It was quite sweet, as were the clothes. Simple, embellished basics like tapestry wrap skirts and floral-print anoraks came layered with bright houndstooth plaid. The lineup struck a tomboyish tone with oversize trousers and baggy sweaters, contrasting with tea-length ball-gown skirts. Each look was grounded by platform oxfords and little socks. All in all, this was a rather nice break between shows.
