Ukrainian Fashion WeekIvan Frolov is beloved here in Ukraine. Like Jean Gritsfeldt, Frolov thinks big in terms of concept and location. For the past several seasons, he has focused on Ukraine in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This season, he even gave his setting a time-travel treatment and staged his show at one of the largest clubs in Kiev during the early aughts, which has since become a space for Hillsong Church (a Pentecostal mega-church). In addition, Frolov cast well-known models from the same era to walk the show.Frolov‘s clothes offer up the same excitement. Still abiding the trends of the millennium, he re-created the JNCO jean silhouette in a metallic gold fabric. Another cheeky piece was a baby pink corseted pullover with a hood. The star-power standout was a shimmering slip dress patched in rhinestones. Given the flashiness, one wouldn’t be hard-pressed to think that Frolov’s clothes have some celebrity appeal. Rumor has it a very well-known entertainer—and her stylist—ordered from the designer several times but has yet to wear anything in public. Let’s see if she sports something anytime soon. It will surely give Frolov his much-deserved big break.

A young designer to watch out for in Ukraine is Ivan Frolov. Like more established Ukrainian names, such as Lilia Litkovskaya, Frolov knows how to create an exciting show atmosphere. This season, he enlisted a boys’ church choir, theming the clothing around love and religion. (In fact, he titled the show For Love, a play on his label name.) Red was the dominant color of the setting and the clothing. It was innocent in some cases, such as on the choirboys’ red sashes. But in the collection itself, the color took on a more sinister feeling. One standout was a green and gold coat with a papal robe silhouette; it had a peek of red around the collar, which lent it a slightly devilish note.Frolov knows how to create a hit item at a decent price point, a quality that is distinguishing him from his Ukrainian peers. His sweatshirts were a great example: A black hoodie featured an illustration of clasped hands and the words “For Love” on the chest, plus a violet brocade hood. Outside of Eastern Europe, he’s already known for his lingerie, which often boasts intricate multi-straps and fine embroidery. According to the designer, the underpinnings will be available at Opening Ceremony within the next few months. Rumor also has it that some celebrities have called in his slinky gold slip dresses from last season.
