Denim has been the most successful category for the label Ksenia Schnaider. Designed by the husband-and-wife duo Ksenia and Anton Schnaider, the label had its breakout in 2017 when it releaseddemi-denims, a shorts-meets-pants jean that ended up on Bella Hadid. Earlier this year, Ksenia toldVogueshe was nervous that the hype around demi-denims would wane. Cleverly, she isn’t riding on the success of that hit. For Spring, she’s reworked the balmy skirts from Resort, dyeing them in sunset hues printed with palm trees and cutting them as short as minis. The print was also used for a pair of shorts covered in sequins and dotted with various measurements—such as from the Sun to the Earth, a technical addition from Anton.Elsewhere, the Schnaiders cut elegant denim shorts in a dark wash, the sides of which were finished off with custom denim buttons. They’re another look that could help the brand outlast the Hadid hype.

Kiev Fashion DaysMany labels hailing from Ukraine sell in a concept store here and there, but breaking into the international market on a larger scale still poses a struggle. Ksenia Schnaider, one of the country’s most successful designers, is a stellar example of how to appeal to an audience beyond Ukraine’s borders. The key lies in her use of denim. A few years ago she created Demi Denims, a pants-meets-shorts sort of jean with a slit at the knee and a tapered leg. The clever style took off and is now sold at Stylebop and Moda Operandi, and Schnaider has been reworking the look successfully for several seasons. For Spring, Schnaider expanded her use of the hardworking material. High-waisted jeans had a pert pleat sewn down the front, and a double-breasted coat, a popular silhouette during the time of the USSR, was rendered in patchwork. Indeed, she noted that she wants the items to be “cared for and passed down from generation to generation, as they were in the Soviet Union.“ Elsewhere the designer based a few pieces off of Soviet womenswear, like a double-breasted white dress with flared, cropped sleeves and a wide double-breasted shirt. This collection suggests that Schnaider’s hits can extend beyond denim.

Secondhand has become a phenomenon within the Eastern Europe fashion world. Ukrainian designer Yana Chervinska creates collections from thrifted finds. Ksenia Schnaider, for her part, has made secondhand cool on a commercial level. Her “Demi-Denims,” often sourced from old denim found at the local Kiev flea market Lesnoy, have become a hit for her label.Schnaider introduced new incarnations of her Demi-Denims for Fall, but it was the secondhand-sourced sporty shirts and trousers that looked best. The designer went back to Lesnoy to buy old racing and biker shirts and then spliced the fabrics together. The result was bright, eye-catching patchwork made from little bits of neon and black fabric with German advertisements, cartoon characters, and Ferrari logos. Schnaider wants to reproduce the pieces on a larger scale. The question is: Will she keep sourcing fabric from Lesnoy, or can she figure out a way to produce the pieces with new materials without losing the authentic feel?
