Ivan Mandžukić is determined to get guys into more color. Last season, he proposed blush pink in the form of flight jackets, round-shouldered coats, and shrunken knits; for Fall ’17, he was feeling an even gutsier shade—purple. Classic men’s pieces like double-breasted blazers and slim trousers got a cheerful update in bright orchid, while the oversize, softly structured coats and parkas came in a surprising shade of violet. Despite how bold that may sound, the models looked cool and relaxed thanks to the simple, familiar silhouettes. Mandžukić has been a fan of unexpected colors since he launched his label in 2010, but we have a feeling this lineup will gain a little extra traction. Optimistic, mood-elevating colors were one of 2016’s biggest messages, and the trend has continued into 2017 so far—from Berlin to the Pre-Fall ’17 collections and this week’s menswear shows in Paris. Considering lavender was also the standout shade in Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino men’s collection this evening, Mandžukić might just be onto something.
