It took several days for the millennial to appear, but appear she did at Kotoha Yokozawa’s show. The 20-something designer is fluent in a specific brand of Internet meme humor, which she translates into very cool, very ’grammable pieces. She began with a pleated top and tank dress printed with a random smattering of quotidian objects: a carton of eggs, a floppy disc, a bowl of multigrain rice. In other words: things millennials like for no real reason. The obvious sellers here were the denim items and the piped and ribbed stretch knits, which looked both comfortable and covetable. Where those knit dresses and tops clung beautifully to the body, the statement denim was cut much looser. See the pencil jean skirt with a front flap pocket, printed with a bag of potato chips (why not?). Yokozawa is also notable for sending out swimwear (one hardly sees it in Tokyo), and her abstract cut-out maillot and bondage tankinis were a welcome addition. So was the absurdist whimsy of a silver hoop pierced through a yellow bell pepper and held like a purse.
