Robyn Berkley and Jared Vere’s brand Live the Process is one fashion business that has actually done pretty well during the pandemic. It scaled back on wholesale orders, focused on direct-to-consumer sales, and attracted women in the market for chic, comfortable at-home clothes. Overall, Live the Process designs are pretty apropos for the moment we’re living in. The brand offers elevated athleisure that hovers high above the oddly printed nylon and neoprene leggings and dance-inspired wrap tops and bodysuits we’re so used to seeing in the market. Berkley and Vere have expanded their collections to include knitwear, cool layering pieces, and separates that look and feel as great for a workout as they do for a Zoom meeting with the boss. This season, the duo really honed in on their fashion-forward loungewear point of view. The combination resort and spring lineup includes standout pieces like a polo cardigan and a tunic top with an asymmetrical hem and keyhole detail at the neckline. Rib-knit pants in a dusty rose shade are attractive, as are styling pieces like boy shorts and bra tops. “Everything is evolving,” Berkley said during a virtual appointment. And it’s true: Live the Process has grown nicely over the last few seasons. Now, it will be telling to see what Berkley and Vere do next. Maybe accessories or wellness products? As this latest collection proved, they have options.

There is no wellness without mindfulness. Being mindful, slowing down, and taking stock are crucial when talking about living a healthy life, even if many (too many) brands try to tell you all it takes is buying pilates classes and celery juice. If the idea of wellness is defined by a sense of calm and a more thoughtful, gentler approach to life, then why is the business of wellness about quick and constant growth? It seems like there’s a new wellness-branded fitness or leisure label popping up every month, maybe every week. Entrepreneurs are jumping on the zen bandwagon, and the wagon is moving at hyper-speed.Robyn Berkley, on the other hand, has been at this whole wellness thing for quite some time. After leaving behind a career in fashion public relations, she spent time in Bali getting certified as a yoga trainer. When she came home, she founded her own PR firm and shortly thereafter, with partner Jared Vere, decided to create a line of workout apparel called Live The Process. This was in 2013. Today, after nearly five years honing her collection, Berkley now has a diverse range of knits and activewear stocked at stores like Barneys and Bon Marché, as well as e-commerce giants like Ssense and Net-A-Porter.Live The Process’s Resort collection, says Berkley, is “not just a collection but an idealist way of how to live your life in the best way possible.” Berkley’s point is that we should choose to wear garments that are good for us and for the environment, and her softly toned, earth-colored collection is just that. She’s designed her body-hugging flared skirts, sharp tank dresses, and ballet-inspired wrap sweaters and tops using sustainable knits and fibers, some of which are made from recycled plastic bottles, and others with Refibra, a fiber which reduces the need to extract raw materials and decreases the impact on natural resources. From an aesthetic point-of-view, Berkley’s offering also extends beyond the walls of the local yoga studio and Juice Press: the cardigans, tie-back tops, and turtleneck dresses are lovely for everyday wear. There are desirable pieces here, both for the active person and those who just want comfortable clothes to wear to the office, to dinner, to wherever. But Berkley may have some challenges where competition is concerned, now that many activewear brands are pegging themselves as proper ready-to-wear. Wellness is now an all-encompassing lifestyle and business model.
If she stays on her mindful course and continues to be precise and thoughtful with her eco-conscious, well-constructed designs, she’ll remain a winner in this crowded space.

For Robyn Berkley and her co-founder Jared Vere, love is in the details. Live the Process is in its fifth year of existence, and they've poured their hearts into the brand, but they're careful not to push the boundaries too far or move in different directions. For Berkley in particular, the evolution of this higher-end athleisure line is dependent on a careful and deliberate tweaking of what’s already working. Pre-fall, she says, is a study in this kind of detail-oriented evolution. The collection builds on the shapes, fit, and color-blocking that first garnered attention from buyers and fashion obsessives back in 2013 when wearing exercise gear 24-7 was a still-new concept. This season Live The Process has introduced a large offering of knitwear, including a polo shirt in pale yellow, a pair of ribbed flared pants, and a wrap skirt. The skirt aside, the newer pieces could take anyone from inside a Pilates studio on to errands, brunch, and beyond. Many of the separates could easily be styled with jeans or a dress, including a dancer-ly sand-colored sweater that ties twice at the back. In a sea of fitness-focused brands, Live the Process stands out for its sophisticated design elements. It’s meant to feel “harmonious,” Berkley said. She and Vere are keenly aware that less can really be more.
